Prolife groups issued a joint statement at a press conference on April 2, 2007 in support of House Bill 175, which bans abortion when Roe v. Wade is overturned. In a hearing later in the day, the groups and women hurt by abortion testified about the harm of abortion. The hearing lasted until until 5:00 a.m. the next morning. A small number of opponents testified against the bill, including a representative of the National Abortion Rights League.

We support the fundamental right to life for all innocent human life and that it is the first duty of government to protect human life. Human life begins at the moment of fertilization and that deliberate action to end innocent human life through abortion is wrong. Abortion is detrimental to women, men, families, and the culture, and that no government should allow mothers to end the life of their own babies.
Prior to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade, Texas protected life in the womb. In recent years, Texas has made every effort to regulate and limit abortion to the fullest extent allowed under the United States Supreme Court’s rulings.
It is only a matter of time before Roe is overturned. Even abortion advocates are convinced that it is only a mater of when, not if, as evidenced by their research and planning for the fall of Roe that dates back at least to 2000. Reversal of Roe will return the abortion issue to the states. It is reasonable that the debate begin in Texas with the pre-Roe law on the books. It is only reasonable and just that the Texas Legislature considers the facts and scientific evidence since Roe that demonstrate that each unborn baby is a unique human being with his or her own unique DNA that has never existed before and will never naturally exist again. The Texas legislature should also consider the evidence of the firsthand, real-life experiences of women following 34 years of widespread, legalized abortion that shows that abortion hurts women physically and psychologically.
When the Supreme Court legalized abortion-on-demand, a fundamental reasoning in the Court’s ruling was that abortion would benefit women. Women have been told that abortion is a safe, simple solution for their “problem.” Thirty-four years later, women suffering from grief, fear, anxiety, depression, drug and alcohol abuse, suicidal thoughts and attempts, nightmares, relationship problems with spouses and children, and other self-destructive behavior following an abortion know a different reality.
The State of Texas should do everything necessary to protect innocent human life. We support the right of the State of Texas to protect women from the physical and psychological harm of abortion by limiting abortions to only save the life of the mother, and we urge passage of HB 175.
